What is a good way of listening? What role do listeners play in the creation of music? In this talk, we will explore two different models of musical experience, one based on the division of labor and the other based on collective craftsmanship. As we shall see, portraying musical experience as mere consumption of musical enjoyment assigns a passive and somewhat irresponsible role to the listeners. Instead, we will practice how to be active and creative listeners of post-1945 art music. This talk will end with a collective interpretation of one of the movements from Higdon's American Canvas.
